Shusui (SHOO-swee): The Shusui koi fish is the doitsu version of the popular Asagi breed. This koi fish is known for its single row of dark blue scales which extend along the dorsal fin with a lighter blue coloring covering the rest of the body. This colorful fish is also popular for its red or orange pattern which should be present on the cheeks, fins, and belly. The most recognizable feature of the Shusui koi fish is the zipper pattern that runs along the dorsal fin. Being one of only two blue koi, this breed is a popular choice for many koi fish owners.

When looking for a Shusui, a symmetrical pattern of scales is ideal as this breed does not have scales throughout their body. Instead, these scales run only down the middle of the koi’s back along the dorsal fins. Where these scales are absent, however, you’ll find the beautiful blue color that this breed is known for.
